How to Maintain an Electric Bike

Getting your new e-bike is exciting. You have a shiny new toy with all sparkly features ready for you to try. While it's fun to explore faraway places with your new bike, it's also important to give it some time for maintenance. Tender-loving care is necessary to ensure that it would be on its tiptop shape and that you'll be safe riding it for the long haul.

Here are some of our tips on how you can keep your e-bike in its best shape.

Have a regular maintenance schedule.

While life can get a little busy sometimes, we highly recommend that you set aside time to get your e-bike checked every once in a while. It's important to see which parts may need some fixing or updating so you can prevent further damage to your bike. We also recommend that you go on a thorough check before going on long rides to ensure that you won’t have any issues when you travel.

Charge whenever you can.

An e-bike's battery is created for recharging thousands of times. If you have an outlet, you may charge your batteries to ensure that you have enough juice for your trips. If you plan to store your batteries, it's ideal to keep them at 30% to 60% (you may check your manual for more details).

Use eco-mode when riding.

Want to extend your battery life? Use the lowest assist level on your e-bike as it consumes very little power. You can also try pedaling faster, making your ride more efficient.

Know how to handle your batteries.

An e-bike's battery is created especially for riding, so make sure to know how to properly attach and detach it. We also encourage you to check the instructions on battery care and charging so you can prevent damage that can generate dangerous levels of heat and cause other malfunctions.

Make sure your tires are inflated properly.

Your e-bike has a motor, making it heavier than conventional bikes. Thus, it's important to keep your tires in check. Make sure to take a look at the psi levels and top tires before each ride. Having under inflated tires does not roll efficiently and will not support your bike well.

Know how to fix a flat.

Whether you're riding an e-bike or a conventional bike, it's important to know how you can fix a flat. Although repair is usually the same with mid-drive motors, hub-drive motors can be a little more complex. Make sure to review your manuals and understand how you can disconnect and reconnect electrics.

Get replacement tires that are specifically for e-bikes.

While it may look the same as that of your conventional bikes, it's important to get replacement tires that are specially created for e-bikes. These ones are sturdier, have good traction and puncture resistance, and can better hold your heavier bike for long rides.

Regularly check your brakes.

While e-bikes are created with adequate stopping power, it's important to still check them regularly. Before each ride, inspect your bike and look for obvious issues such as loose pads, pad wear, or excessive rotor. Make sure to update your pads whenever necessary.

Lubricate your chain regularly.

Minimize chain issues by cleaning and lubricating them regularly. You can wipe it off with a rag to remove old oil and dirt and apply a new lube to keep your rides smooth. You want to make sure that there is no build-up of grit and grime on your surface to ensure that your bike is on its tip top shape.
